Looking for a fun, safe, outdoor event? Want to explore the Rogue River Preserve, a haven for biodiversity alongside the Rogue River? Curious about the work SOLC is doing to protect land, water, and wildlife habitat on the valley floor? Join us for our next Open Lands Day at the Rogue River Preserve on Saturday, October 16!

To limit crowding on the trails, we require pre-registration for specific time slots:

- self-guided explorations start at 9:00 am, 11:00 am, and 1:00 pm; check out field guides, binoculars, and other gear from our lending library, and chat with docents and masters students along the trail to learn as you explore.

- guided hikes start at 8:00 am (birds, led by Shannon Rio) and 12:00 noon (natural history led by Kristi Mergenthaler)

For everyone's safety, all participants will be required to wear masks and maintain a 6’ distance when interacting with individuals outside their household group. In addition, we will observe all state-mandated COVID precautions.

8 a.m. Bird Hike: Join Klamath Bird Observatory’s president and wildlife educator Shannon Rio for a morning of birding the Preserve. There are a number of birds that are here all year round that we are likely to see. There also may be some migrants heading south. The group may visit the "fairy forest" in the floodplain and the recently erected Motus wildlife tracking station - part of a developing network of tracking flying birds, bats and large insects with very small trackers. This is for all level of birders. Binoculars can be provided.

12 p.m. Natural History Loop Walk: Join botanist and SOLC Stewardship Director Kristi Mergenthaler on a natural history walk on our new loop trail. The loop is 1.5 miles roundtrip.

As much as we love our furry friends at SOLC, pets are not allowed. SOLC does make exceptions for ADA service animals. Companion animals, however, are not allowed.

If you have questions about the day, contact Teresa Fernandez at 541-482-3069 Ext 107 or email her.
