Focus: Birds & Natural History
Description: Expert birder and naturalist Dennis Vroman will lead an exploration of the beautiful bird life in the Beekman Woods, a conserved property part of the greater Jacksonville Woodlands in Jacksonville. We’ll bird a number of habitats including mixed evergreen forest and oak woodland. The federally listed Gentner’s fritillary may be in bloom.

Meeting Location: Jacksonville, Oregon. Meeting location and directions will be emailed upon registration.
Difficulty: Easy, slow birding pace on trails. Round trip is about 2 miles over the 4 hours.
If you ever peer into a half-rotted log you might be so lucky to find a slippery pair of eyes staring back at you. If you’re extremely lucky those eyes could belong to a Pacific giant salamander (Dicamptodon tenebrosus). Usually seen wriggling through woody debris or eating a mildly toxic banana slug, these marbled beauties are found throughout western Oregon.
